Flats

I don't know if I am just lucky, but after a long hiatus I have been back on a bike, riding again since March 06. In that time I have logged about 1500 miles. I haven't had a flat once. In fact, I can't recall anyone in the club I ride with having a flat on a ride. (Of course, I'm usually dropped way off the back on the uphills, so perhaps they have had the flat and repaired it and are back on the bike before I caught up. :-)) I carry a patch kit, a spare tube, and a CO2 inflater, but have never had call to use them.

Any ideas why this might be the case? Based on anectodal evidence I would have expected at least one flat by now.

The last time I bragged about how few flats I have I then had two flats in two days.
Never, never say you don't have flats, I_bBRAD is right.

There are somethings that just shouldn't be talked about. Whatever you were talking about is one of them.

Please, on your next ride carry 2 tubes, a patch kit, your CO2 inflator and a hand pump as well as a cell phone. You are going to need all of them to overcome the curse you just placed on yourself.

My ride partner and I acknowledge a few things to the biking gods before every ride.
1. A flat could happen at any time
2. A crash could happen at any time
3. Rednecks in cars and trucks are entertaining. Although we have filed our quota for the time being, more please!
4. Rain is good!
5. With any luck, our outbound headwind will turn around so we will be equally challenged on the return trip.

This practice seems to keep the bad luck to a minimum. Every time we have had something negative happen to us and I do mean every time, it was almost immediately preceded by a comment like "Man, I haven't had a flat all year" or the similarly inviting "This headwind is a *****. At least we'll have a great tailwind on the way back!"

You better buy a case of tubes and some CO2. You are in for a nasty few months.

I've been riding a mtb lately sans pump, extra tube and patch kit; on yesterday's ride, shortly after being chased by tan lab foaming at the chops, I heard the familiar pffft-pfffft-pfffffffft. This nail had embedded itself up to the bend in the rear tire.
