opinions on wheter my light is fixeable?

Perhaps this is a question for the total geek section, but I'll try it here first.

I was riding to work Saturday, going downhill at a good clip, with my light battery strapped to my frame's downtube (bad idea in hindsight, but it keeps it away from my knees). Anyhow, I must have hit a bump or something, but before I knew it my bike had decelerated about 20mph to about 8 or 10 mph before I even could think about stopping by my own power (fixie). I'm suprised I didn't endo.

my battery pack from my Planet bike system must have nicked my tire and then gotten sucked in HARD.
My road tire wore a gouge clean through the casing, and even the paint or plastic coating around the batteries, down to the bare (and now polished) metal of the battery. A very nice clean gouge at that, I couldn't have done a prettier job if I tried.

Anyhow, with the battery exposed, to all the elements, should I replace it? or try to fix it. It still seems to work, at least it did on the way home that night. Is some sort of latex or other plastic spray that I can use to seal it back up?

I'll post a picture when I get home tonight.

Does it still work? If the bottle is just seperate cells wired together you can replace those yourself.

Picture?

if the case is nicked but still working otherwise consider clear silicone caulk

+1 on caulking it back together. Just make sure nothing can short to the exposed battery casings.

That or JB weld... After you make yourself some kind of armature to support it as it cures. Then you could shape, smooth & paint it to hide the wound.

here are the promised photos. Any new opinions?

I'm not sure about JB weld, isn't there some metal in that? If so, I think it might short out the battery.

It will be fine to fix up. You may want to go about it in layers. A little sealer of your choice on the battery, then the next layer and the next. That way, if the batteries die you have a chance of replacing just the cells themselves. Or just bog it up and be done with it. Your call.

I'd just fill the gap with black latex caulking. You haven't broken the cell case so the battery will be fine. You should probably stay away from silicone since it gives off acetic acid during cure. It probably wouldn't be a problem but stay on the safe side.

On the other hand, get rid of the sandstone tires. I know they are great for training but they're just too abrasive
