trek 930 canti to V brake conversion issue
Hello all, I'm fixing up an old trek 930 for my wife and bought a v brake set up. the previous canti set up had the cable running down the top tube with bumpers to a small "noodle" welded just below the seat post clamp. On the canti this was no problem as the cable came right down the middle. Now to get the cable into the cable guide pipe i'm having to darn near pull a hairpin to get into the 90 degree pipe. This also pushes the pipe holder downwards towards the tire-simply not efficient due to the friction and multipe bends. It is a little better if i use the 130 degree pipe-but still loads of friction. I looked at swithching up the cable routing but i run into other issues on drag etc on the derailer cables. My next option is to bust out the drill and dremmel tool and cut into the noodle to allow the cable to exit mid way thru the noodle as to line up with the cable guide pipe. not sure if others have run into this. all help appreciated-or its going to be dremmel time. thanks

Is there a cable stop brazed on the frame? If so, use it and skip routing the cable into the cantilever mount/bridge. Make sure you are using V-brake levers and not cantilever brake levers, they are different. Good luck.

You need to have a cable housing to connect to your V-brake noodle or the brakes won't work. If your bike doesn't have a cable stop near the rear of the top tube (and I suspect that it doesn't) there are 2 solutions. The cheap, dirty fix is to run cable housing all of the way from the brake lever and zip tie it to the top tube. A more expensive but much more elegant solution is to buy a bolt on cable stop. They're available from QBP so any LBS can get one for you. They come in different sizes to so know the diameter of your top tube when you go to order.

Have you updated the levers to a V brake compatible lever? If you don't your wife will have a nasty surprise when trying to stop.

Different bike same issue.
I just ran housing from the lever to the noodle. Lube the cable and housing before you put the cable in ot the housing, and drag won't be much of an issue. And learn to use your front brake.
zip tie the housing to the frame.
Make sure you have levers designed for v-brakes, canti levers won't work(OUCH!).

Yeah, first off i got the tektro quartz V brake package so i have the appropriate levers. to clarify some..the bike is set up with 3 brazed cable stops at the front of the bike-then free cable down the top bar to two cable stops (reversed for the) derailers. the left cable then goes into the noodle- enter my delima.
thanks Retro for the help. i started looking for bolt on stops-they seem to only be offered in 2 cable stops.
Further reserach has taken me to bike building site that offer cable stops.
Next question. should I look at getting someone to braze on another to line up with the other 2? will this damage the integrity of the frame?
again thanks to all for looking out for my wifes well being and the suggestions. any more are welcome
