new knee problems, same old bike

My wife has been riding a Specialized A1 Globe for the last 4 or 5 years. Nothing has changed on it, just maintained well. After all this time she is developing knee pain. Seat height looks right, slight bend in leg at the bottom of the stroke. It (the bike) does have a suspension post that I personally find wobbly to ride. She (the wife) doesn't clip in or use cages. Is it perhaps she is too upright on this city style bike?
Comments, suggestions or similar ailments out there?

Is she pushing too large a gear? Teach her to use her gears and spin a little more. My wife tends to stay in larger gears longer than she should. Grinding is very hard in the knee joints.

I'm an older guy with bum knees and I swear by Biopace chainrings.

Deanster04 and top506, I appreciate the input. I did a forum search and found the Hi gear issue and the biopace isssue. I think she's a masher, and we'll work together on this, not to rule out the biiopace. thanks again.
