Old french stem replacement - help.

hello everyone!
My motobecane mirage (70's) is a bit big for me, I want to replace the stem for a short one - (Nitto Deluxe 50mm ) - do I need special extra parts, etc? Would the change work with my old bike? do I have to buy a new handdle bar? I asked my LBS but they want to charge me half of my paycheck for the change... I was thinking about buying the parts and paying them for the labor... thank you.
here is link of apicture of my bike https://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...guas/moto3.jpg

also here is a picture of the NITTO 50mm stem https://imagehost.vendio.com/bin/imag...oDeluxe501.jpg

thanks!

This stem is probably a 22.2mm and you need a 22.0mm for a french bike. Not to worry, but you may spend a little time with sandpaper. check out https://sheldonbrown.com/velos.html for french info.
you will also be rewrapping at least one side of the bars and removing and replacing one of the brake levers - that adds some expense.

Actualy I think you need a 21 mm stem for a French bike. Play it safe and measure the one you have or see if it has something written on it.

thanks for the responses!
I am going to buy the NITTO 50mm stem - i talked to my LBS and the owner knew about the sanding down the stem & was cool with it... but he also mentioned I will need a new handlebar... guess it is a good excuse to switch for those BULLHORN handlebars...

all the best!
