Need Advice...
Hello all... New Guy here....
I have an old (1994-ish) Skykomish (made by Roadmaster for Costco I think) Mtn Bike.... I used to ride this thing all the time in HS (even made some 100 mile trips on it while in the scouts...
I pulled it out of storage to go riding with my kid, and tried to shift.... SNAP!... Something broke in the right (rear) shifter.... at first I thought it was the cable, but now I'm pretty sure the shifter is fried.... Its a Shimano Altus C-10.
Now I sold my truck, and actually need the bike to commute back and forth to school.... What are my options in replacing this shifter? I did some research here, and found a thread that said any 7spd shimano shifter will work... Is that right?
I'm poor... Flat broke actually, and cant afford more than about $20 to fix this... What do you all say my best options are? Can I just put one of those old school "twisty" shifters on the bike?
Sorry for the improvised nomenclature, but I really don't know much about this stuff... I haven't ridden a bike much in about ten years....
TIA
Billy

Welcome back to the fold Billy.
One of those thumb operated friction shifters should do the trick... along with a new cable. (Frozen cable+excessive force=broken shifer) Tho' I'd take it apart and see what's the what first.
You could posibly find a donor bike at Salvation Army, Goodwill, thrift shop for the shifter.
Good luck.

Fixed it!
Thanks Stacey!
I had an epifiny.... "I'm a darn Diesel Mechanic... If I can fix a sick Cummings 903, Surly I can fix this..." Sho nuff... I took the shifter off the bike, and took of the plastic housing (PITA by the way) and started fiddling with it... The tension spring on the shift pawl had "popped" out of place (nomenclature?) I removed the pawl, cleaned up the dried lube (was very sticky and "gunky") replaced the parts and it works fine! I just hope it lasts for the rest of the summer...
A couple of years ago, my last Master Gunnery Sergent in the Marines (he was a pro rider back in the day) helped me get the bike set up for commuting... Street type tires and high pressure tubes (says 90psi). Now I figure I just need a rack, and I should be good for riding back and forth to school....
I appreciate the advice...
