Help with stem/position on bike

Hi, I posted this is the mountain bike forum yesterday and received ZERO response, so I thought I'd try over here.

So, I've been getting into some more technical, aggressive terrain lately (i.e. long, steep downhills, rock gardens, etc) and it has pointed out what I think may be a weakness in my current setup.

Whenever I'm really stressing the handlebar/stem area (especially on the downhills) I get some creaking and flex at the stem. I've lubed and re-tightened both the steerer and handlebar ends of the stem, with no luck. And the flex is definitely in the stem.

I also would like my position to be a bit more upright/further back on the downhills. It's a big bike (21") so I don't have a problem getting stretched out for the flats or getting forward for the climbs.

I currently have a 90mm 10 degree rise stem (06 rockhopper stock stem). I am thinking maybe a bit beefier (AM/FR type) stem in a 50mm or 60mm length might be in order. I am also pretty heavy (240) and I do not fear speed.

Thoughts, experiences, advice?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you've answered your own question. Try a more ruggedly built, steeper stem, maybe one designed for DH or freeride bikes.

Also, you probably shouldn't oil the steerer tube where the stem connects, as you rather want the friction there.
