Getting the handlebars higher
I love to ride, but my nearly-67yo backbone positively is not having any of this crouch-over-the-handlebars nonsense. For my backbone and me, it's upright or nothing.
Right now my 'summer bike' is a nice old mixte with a Wald North Road bar on a 230mm swan-neck stem. It's not quite enough. The bar is still barely higher than the saddle, and I need to extend my arms fully to grasp the grips.
I could probably do one of those Nashbar quill-to-threadless adapters, but all the threadless setups I've seen have a lifetime supply of Ugly. They have so much Ugly they could sell the extra on eBay, if anyone would buy it. They're ugly in the same way Art Deco is ugly compared to Art Nouveau.
I thought of a quill-stem extender, but I don't seem able to actually find any. Sheldon mentions them, but they're not available from Harris that I've found. Or anywhere else, seemingly.
Suggestions?

Nitto makes a long stem called a technomic, or some name like that. It should
be high enough?,,,,BD

www.jensonusa.com They have them, other places too, you will NOT find a longer stem hight than the Kalloy stem they have. It's a quill stem, no need for the adapter. ALSO www.bikepartsusa.com which has Wald and other cheap steel ones.Don't waiste your time with others, NOT available.

Get a Nitto Technomic Deluxe or Dirtdrop Stem. I don't trust a long stem that's not cold forged.

I have a Zoom adjustable stem on my older road bike - quill type, threaded headset. I think they have two options for the length and the one I have will get the stem far above the seat, even when the stem is horizontal. Unfortunately, in my opinion, this stem has more than its fair share of ugly.
Do a web search for "adjustable stem" and you 'll find a bunch of options from threaded extension, threaded adjustable quill stem, threaded-threadless adapter w/ 1 1/8" adjustabale stems, etc. etc.
I haven't seen a threaded adjustable quill type stem that has the beautiful clean lines of a quill stem. They all look kind of klunky and ugly to me. Good luck though.
