There is no good method that works to break a chain without a chain tool.

There is a way. Buy an angle grinder and grind off the pins and plate (but it will cost you more than the chain tool).

Let's start over, and get off on the right foot this time.
You need to break your chain in order to add a master link and you're trying to do it with a hammer? I can only assume you're going to ride on this chain, because the purpose of the breaking is to add a master link, so my advice would be buy a chain tool because it may not be safe to ride with a chain you've broken by hammering and pliering on.
Whoops. Darn it! Same response. There's something wrong with meeeeeee!!!!!!

I'd hate to buy a chain tool just to add a 75c link, but I can't manage to break the chain. I tried hammering out the pin with a small screwdriver, but I couldn't get it to budge. Then I tried wedging open a pair of outer links with some pliers, but I ended up snapping the pliers.
Is there any way to break a chain without a chain tool (it's okay if the link gets damaged...I'm replacing it)?

This thread is hilarious.
Back when i was in high school and had no money, and improvised all kinds of bike tools with varying degrees of success, i did buy a chain tool. It was one of the only tools that there was simply no alternative for.

Grind the rivets flat with the plate using a cutoff or bench grinder. You can then tap out the pin with a finish nail.
IMO spend the $10 on a chain tool.............

Go read our OP's comment in the thread titled "DO THE HIGH END BIKES SELL OK . . . .etc". His comment there and the emoticon he chose to use there say volumes about his own character and really frame the picture painted of him here.

Botto would never have responded to a thread like this. He is clueless when it comes to bike mechanics.

Ohmyghod, this is the best!
I haven't visited BF for a few months; have I missed other threads like this?
You guys are all hysterical, especially the OP!
BTW, there's a word for people who work on bikes with the wrong tool(s)...
Stranded!
It's great to be back.

Well considering I have actually done peer reviewed research in metabolics leading to a drug that is currently in clinical trials, I figure I am okay to comment on a message board about basic nutrition.
Now, do you need any help pumping up your tires? I am sure I can find some six year old to help if you really get stuck.

That depends; does the six-year old know how to do it without using a pump?

Really, it was stupid of me to even suggest botto can't pump up his tires. His inflated ego should provide plenty of air without a pump.

Now, as for non-destructive methods, several do exist that don't require a chain tool, but hydraulic presses and laser drills are out of most people's price ranges...
