shellacing

besides using shellac on grip tape / cloth... can shellac be used alternatively to clear coat or give a nice tone to a paint job and then have a clear coat applied on top of it?

I expect shellac is incompatible with most current paint/clear coat systems. Also, shellac yellows over time and will change the color of the underlying paint even if it stays put.

I think you mean clear coat. You can do this, but you have to be very careful about your choice of clear-coat. If you use laquer base over enamel, the enamel paint bubbles and visa-versa. Some clear-coat will peel off the decals.

I have used clear coat over paint finishes that I painted myself and have not found much of a benefit. The clear coat does not appear to help prevent scratches on the paint. So, to answer you question, I don't think it is worth the effort or the risk of making a mistake.

I think you are better advised to just wax your bike with a good car wax. This will keep the bike shiny and protect against weather and road icky.

hahaha road icky.... well thing is I did a rattle can enamel job. I was thinking put a coat of white shellac on the enamel to stain the paint a little and then put a few coats of rattle can clear coat on top to protect and then buff the job down with a super fine grit wet paper, then wax on top of that for a nice finish...
