Upgrading from 8 to 9 gears
I have trek 1000 and am upgrading my gears from 6 to 9 speed. I believe i have to buy/do
1) new 9 spped cassete which is compatible with wheel (shamano hg50 11-25)
2) new chain (new thin one)
3) new chainset **need advice**
4) adjust gears **looking forward to leaning how to do this properly**
My problem i have is that i don't know what chainset i require as don't what my bottom bracket is! Can anybody give advise and how easy is this to do? Thanks Newbie

You mean "crankset", not "chainset". No need change it at all.
You will also need a new right shifter/brifter.
For adjustments, have you discovered the Park Tools site yet?
Edit: dyslexia.

Crankset or the front gears you can keep, if they good.
Need
CHAIN (SRAM with EzLink)
Casette (again SRAM it)
Front shifter (right side)
If you have intigrated shifters and brakes, then this is more expensive. Think $50 minimum for a single shifter.
You will pretty much buy everything off eBay. Because cheapest place, nashbar, is not that cheap for these things.
This is a good time to weight in a 9 speed upgrade vs a 10 speed upgrade. Upgrade your cable to SP41 as well (Dura Ace), cost like $12, totally worth it.

I don't understand why i need a shifter...I thought you simple adjust the H and L limit screws on the derailer and then adjust the index for the thinner cassete so enabling you to keep your shifter? Also, if the chain is thinner then will it be compatible with the front chain rings? Thanks all your advice

Your 6 speed shifter, if you have indexed shifting, will have 6 indexes. You need 9 indexes, thus a need for new shifter. If go 10 speed you need 10 indexes. Your six speed shifter should be useful with 9 speed casette, but you will only have 6 gears at a time.
If you have friction shifters mounted on side of the frame, then you don't need new shifters. But I think you have integrated shifter and brake levers.

Ummm... Did you want to change from 8 speed (as in subject line)? or 6-speed (as in OP)?
The outside is thinner. The inside is the same.
And obviously you haven't found the Park Tools site yet. Do try.

I don't see an 11-25 listed.
The reference I see for your bike is that it comes with a SRAM 850 12-26, 8 speed?
If you are going to an 11T cog, I think you MIGHT also have to switch to a compact Freehub?
