Are High End R-Derailleurs Integrated
Im in the market for a higher end RD and mine bolts onto to the hanger. I noticed the pictures of the XT line show a hole instead of a allen hex and Im assuming these go on directly to the hub/axel (integrated).
Are all XT's like this? or can I get one that bolts on to the hanger instead of the axle/hub?.
Thanks

AFAIK they have been moving to this style to go along with the beefier axles associated with rear suspension. But I don't really know if they're making both styles still. There's plenty of NOS XT out there, though.

I just trashed my derailleur today via branch thru spokes. Im trying to find a replacement fir my Alivio and it most confusing as shimanos site has no specs really and all sorts of model numbers.
I need a hex nut attaching 8-9 speed RD that has Total Capacity of 41T. I guess it doesnt matter if its Top or Low Normal. No one specifys attachment but show a RD that appears to have a thru hole as opposed to a hex nut.

unless you have rapid rise shifters, you need top-normal. make sure you're not confused by rapid rise and rapid fire. rapid rise (low-normal) starts derailleur in the largest/lowest cog. they are not backwards compatible with traditional shifters.
For 41t capacity you need a long cage.
All shimano's derailleurs except for the Saints and some Hones are gonna attach the same as your Alivio and have the same mounting spindle

The shifters aren't compatible or incompatible based on whether the derailleur is rapid rise or not. The shifting action will simply work oppositely between the two types of derailleurs. Cable pull ratio is the same regardless. I've used older Deore trigger shifters with a rapid rise derailleur, it worked fine. You can even use a Shimano drop bar STI rear shifter with a rapid rise derailleur, or a Shimano indexed bar end or downtube shifter for that matter.
