Chainset for 7 speed?

Chainset for 7 speed?
My girlfriend will want her chainset back pretty soon -- besides, I'm only using it for emergency.
So, I need to buy a new one. Looking on Wiggle I noticed some chainsets are designated as 9 speed, some as 8 speed, none as 7 speed.
Does it matter? Can I buy a 9 speed, fit a 9 speed chain, and have it work with a 7 speed cassette? Or should I look for a 7 speed chainset?

What is a "chainset"? Are you talking about a new chain? You took the chain off your girlfriends bike and put it on yours?

Any crank designated "8-speed" will work fine. "9-speed" or "10-speed" cranks have the chainrings slightly closer together and need their matching width chain to run quietly and shift well.
So, with an 8-speed crank you could use your current chain. If you buy a 9-speed crank you should also get a 9-speed chain which will work with 7,8 or 9-speed freewheels/cassettes.
