Back to BASICS - Front Derailleur
Hi
Read some posts - followed advice - BUT - still cant get Front Derailleur to work properly - So some questions
1 Do i need to obtain a pro set alignment block to keep fd open when setup
2 Do I turn fully in the handlebr shift adjustment knurl or fully out or halfway for setup
3 Do I turn low and top adjustment screws in : have them midway or out before I attach cable
shimano acera-x - 3 chainring
regards

you dont need the plastic block that the derailleurs come with. all you need to make sure is that the outer cage is about 2 to 3mm above the outer chainring and that the outer cage is parallel with the outer chainring.
turn the adjustment barrel on the shifter all the way in and then turn it out one and a half turns. before you connect the cable on the derailleur you wnat to set the low limit screw. make sure the cranks are properly tightened on to the bottom bracket in the case that they were removed or newly installed and then shift the rear derailleur into the easiest gear. adjust the low limit screw on the front derailleur in or out until the inner cage is about 1 to 2 mm away from the chain. sometimes its hard to measure the distance so adjust the screw until it no longer rubs the chain and then out another 1/4 turn.
now you can connect the cable and go on with adjusting the cable tension.
if this didnt make any sense check out the park tool repair site at parktool.com/repair. they have pictures along with their instructions.

The most common mistake in adjusting an FD is in the improper choice of azimuthal angle for the derailleur. If the angle is bad, no amount of other adjustments will produce an acceptable shifting. When starting from zero, try to make the cage parallel to the outer ring. The limit screws and cable tension can be adjusted back and forth.
After you gain experience with adjustments and have a good comprehension of the shifting's mechanics, you can experiment with slight tilting of the cage, away from the parallel direction, and even with tweaking of the cage's shape.
