Sunrace

Anyone here know how Sunrace stacks up with Shimano/Sram?? I see they bought Sturmey-Archer some years ago and from their website seems to have a variety of products. I am particularily interested in the 8-speed freewheels as I have an older bike that is moving to 8-speeds (shift-necessary) and do not want to replace the rear hub.

I have used one of their 7s freewheels and it shifted just fine. Wider freewheels = more axle breakage, so be forewarned.

These are older solid axle, mid-80's MTB's, so I am not as worried about the axles.

Sun Race is decent enough stuff. It's not as precise (or expensive) as Shimano, SRAM or Camppy but it's functional. I have one of their 8-speed cassettes (Nashbar house branded) on one of my bikes and shifting with STI's is good enough.

Over the summer I converted an old rusty mtb into my beach cruiser/vacation bike and I used mostly Sunrace entry level components. Everything was purchased through Bike Tools etc.

https://biketoolsetc.com

The bike now rocks the 6spd optical thumb shifters, a 6spd freewheel, and one of the riveted cranksets. No complaints on the reliability, shifting etc., it is what it is. The bike spent the summer at a shore house subjected to sand and salt spray, and other than a bit more surface rust all over, the bike is in superb riding condition. For on the cheap I was able to resurrect an old but solid steel frame and turn it into a psuedo-beach bike that is a blast to ride around town.

Sunrace is bottom barrel, but works. Definitely not in the same league as SRAM and Shimano.
