Bottom Bracket Bearing

Hi,

I've just taken a bottom bracket off a bike. However, as the picture shows below, the bearing on the ND side has come unattached from the centre unit. How would I reattach it?

Thanks

I believe you can tap the bearing back into place usling a hammer. It is best to direct the force against the inner race of the bearing (part of the bearing next to the spindle) and to make sure the force is evenly distributed around the bearing to ensure the bearing goes on straight. Often, I'll place a socket over the bearing (use a socket with a diameter as close to the diameter of the inner race) to act as a "press" and tap on the socket with a hammer. Place some grease at the bearing to spindle interface.

Find a deep socket that is the same diameter (or just barely larger than) as the INSIDE ring of the bearing and carefully tap the bearing back on. The idea is to drive it on by moving the inner ring, do not use a socket that bears on the plastic or the outer ring as this will ruin the bearing.

Go slowly, if you drive it too deep, it will make the bearing bind.

Thanks for that.

I've just looked at the bottom bracket again, and it actually looks to me like the centre bit has gone too far over towards the drive side. Anyone else agree?

Here's a better picture:
