Have you considered flipping the stem over?

The heck with flipping the stem, just get a Salas or Profile 130° stem.

+1 That'll negate the need for up to 2 or 3 of those spacers.

60mm isn't much for a quality CrMo steerer tube. It'll be fine. You can flip it to save perhaps 10mm, but the reach may differ slightly.
The bike will be riding still in that config long after the naysayers have lost their teeth to old age.

this is what my lbs told me. i have doing this build with their advice, but i just wanted a second and third opinion.

i know it's somewhat vain, but the look of all those spacers really bugs me. it just doesn't look "right". i may end up taking it apart and looking for a new frame to mount everything back up. as it's my first build, i want to make it just right.

thanks all-

What do you plan on using the bike for? You could go with a double stem setup and hang a nice touring bag on the front.

Ah, I'm a "naysayer" if I disagree.

Does that make you a "yeasayer"?

Most importantly, does the frame fit you? If not optimal, then I'd opt no to chop up that fine fork, and sell the frame, and select a more fitting frame and fork. The reasoning is that it's your first build, and if you're slightly dissatisfied or feel you compromised, you'll be planning another build quite soon.

And yes, it does look unorthodox, even though it's functional.
It's a beautiful frame, it should sell easily.

this is going to be more of a sporting bike- something to do 30++ mile jaunts at a quick clip. so, the touring bag is not really suitable. that's a strange set-up- reminds me a bit of something sheldon "function" brown might do.

having looked at everything more closely, i realize that it's important to figure out what kind of drop i think i'm going to be using. presently, on my commute bike, i have about 65 mm- but that's for a commute bike. for this bike, i may have it a bit lower as it's primary function is to be more of a sporting roadbike for exercise. i was fitted a few weeks back but one can never tell how much drop you feel comfortable with until you try it out. i may take some spacers away and/or flip the stem and try a bit more drop- perhaps 85-90mm which would bring the spacer height to just 4 cm. or i may just sell the damn frame and buy a bigger one- as much as i don't want to!

does the frame fit? i thought it did. i knew it was a bit short, but i wasn't expecting it to be that small. it's not optimal, and you may be right- i might have to start over.

again guys, thanks so much for your input. i like hearing all the varied opinions.
