Relacing a wheel, trying to use the same spokes

So the rear rim on my fixed gear started cracking around the spoke holes. I've tried to buy the same rim (Mavic CXP22 32 hole) but no lbs around here has any in stock and apparently it will take them a month to order them from Mavic.

My question I pose to you is if I find a rim with the same ERD, can I reuse the same spokes? Also, I found the erd for CXP22 listed at 598 and 596, how can I measure the rim I have to determine the ERD?

Yep. Same ERD, same spokes. Even if it's off a couple mm might be ok (verify with a spoke calculator after you measure spoke length.

I haven't had to try it yet, but to measure, clip the heads off two spokes, thread nips onto them, and drop them into opposite spoke holes. Pull them tight to each other, and put a sharpie mark across both of them somewhere, where they overlap. Pull them back out, line up the sharpie marks, and measure to the shoulder of the nips (this critical part I'm not quite sure of -- may be the end of the nipple?).

It should be the shoulder I'd say. Otherwise you'd have to take into account the thickness of the nipple heads. I'd also suggest trying about 4 or 6 spots around the rim just in case it's not quite round anymore. Average the sizes or find a spot where it's the correct diameter.

Is a 3 mm difference in ERD too much to reuse spokes, or do you think it will be kosher?

I've been trying to find a decent cheap alternative to the cxp22 but the only one I've found thus far is the DTswiss rr 1.1 for $76. I hear that its a great rim, but its a little pricey for me. The other, cheaper ones (velocity aero and aerohead) that I've looked up are about 3 mm off.

Thanks for the help, btw.

Or maybe they won't. My shop has been charging me $1 - $1.50 a spoke. $0.25 apiece doesn't exist anywhere but online in my experience.

3mm too long? Get new spokes.
Too short? Maybe. I might chance it for NDS rear, or front wheel, if funds are scarce.

The ERD for the CXP22 is 597 according to mavic.com.

A 2 mm difference in ERD would change your spoke length by .9 to 1.0 mm.

Try to find a rim that is 595 to 599.

Edit: Velocity Dyad ERD = 596

If they are too short use 16mm nipples.

I'm not sure how effective that is. I belive that 12mm and 16mm nipples have the same amount of thread. Only difference is that the 16 mm ones would cover but not engage otherwise exposed threads.

Not in my experience. Both 16 and 12 mm nipple threads engage at about the same distance from the inwards-pointing end, so a 16 mm nipple would be a good fix for a spoke that's 3-4 mm too short.

Yeah, we (and all other shops I know) sell DT Champions for 1.00/spoke and they just go up a dime from there depending on quality. The only way someone gets a discount is if they're a great customer or if we're lacing up 72 spokes for them.
