Noob needs clarification...

Looking to buy a reusable link for my chain to make servicing it easier, and most links specify for an 8, 9 or 10 speed chain.

Can I assume that 8, 9 or 10 refer the number of cogs on the rear cassette? For example, an 8 spd would mean 8 cogs on the rear cassette.

Is this right?
