Side Mount Pedals

I've tried various search techniques and can't seem to find anything on this subject. Has anyone tried Side Mount Pedals and what do you think of them? Easier to clip in and out of? Any other observations?

Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

I believe Lennard Zinn wrote up a review of a prototype of these things a couple of years ago. The review wasn't very enthusiastic IIRC.

Maybe there is a reason why the prototype was shown in 2004 but hasn't made it into production.
