Broke the first rule.....need headset help

First rule is look close, make notes and take digital pics iwhen you are taking something apart.

I didn't do that when I pulled my shimano 600 headset apart for a rebuild.

Now it's back together...but the lock nut shows thread....or in other works it is not screwed down all the way on the steerer.

Is this ok or should I really see no threads?

If it is not ok any thoughts on why everthing might be too long? My only thoght is that I put the bearing races in upside down.

any ideas appreciated

Does it have loose ball bearings in retainers, or sealed bearings? Can you post some pics - maybe even with it taken apart showing all parts in order?

You probably just put a spacer in the wrong place.

There often is a keyed washer between the threaded race and locknut, did you put that back on? Park threaded headset instructions

this was a huge help....I think I put the top bearing race on upside down...it seemed to fit "better"

I will check tonight and repost with pic if needed
