7 speed cassette on 8 speed hub

Got a 7 spd cassette today, I put a 4.5mm spacer on the hub, took the bolts out of the cassette and fitted it on to the hub (all the spacers went on correctly) and tightened it up, unfortunately the cassette was a little bit loose (is this normal when the bolts are taken out?)

Any how after a lot of head scratching I decided to install the spacer between the small cog of the cassette and the lockring and this tightened up nicely.

As anyone else done this and is it safe?

Thanks

Bikes: Tandem Beach Crusier, 1989 Cannondale M300 Mt. Bike, turned cyclocross. 2006 Trek 2200... I hate Trek, but love this bike.... others that are near junk.

It's fine, I would put the spacer behind the big ring and adjust the limit.

If it's still loose with the spacer installed I'd add an additional 1/2mm or 1mm spacer all behind the big cog.

Since the lockring is designed to work with a serrated small cog, I'm not sure how well it's going to stay tight with the spacer there. You may have some chain line and derailleur adjustment issues too.

Shim and QBP sell 4.5mm spacers for this situation

Well just checked what size the spacer is and its in fact 3mm, so I'll put the spacer on the hub first and see if the cassette fitts with the bolts
