8 speed campy hub upgrade options
I have an 8-speed Campy bike and three wheelsets. With cranks (ones I got ebay are worse than my current set) and parts becoming rarer and unavailable, I would like to upgrade my drive train, but that means I have to upgrade my wheels as well.
My question is if it is possible to replace the free hub body or axle on the wheels and put in a 9 or 10 speed compatible hub. BTW all my rear wheels have record hubs.
I am not tied to campy and if it is even possible to use Shimano hubs, I am open to it. Rebuilding 3 rear wheels is just too costly I think (Reflex, old Zipp and Shamal)

Campy 8-speed hub bodies aren't compatible with 9 or 10-speed freehubs. Don't know about Mavic or Zipp stuff.
The amount of time, trouble and money people throw at a bike to gain an extra cog or 2 amazes me. And the narrower chains wear out faster too. I'd just stick with the 8-speed stuff if I were you. That's what I do.

Yep, I'm still running my Record 8-speed Ergo. The only change I made recently was I swapped out the cranks for a new 10 speed compact crankset. Other than that, everything else is 8 speed.

I've seen Campy 9s freehub bodies advertised, but the ad didn't specifically address whether it would retrofit an 8s hub. Well over $100 just for the part. I'm building up an 8s right now, and it'll stay that way for a while.

(s adn 10s will not fit on an 8s freehub body. Theoretically, you could put a 10s body on an 8s, but I've never been able to find the parts. I converted one 8s to a 9s using a Wheels Manufacuring spacer kit. That works well but I don't think they are available anymore.
8s is hard to find. When I broke my derailler, it was cheaper to upgrade to 9s with the spacer kit than to replace the derailler with a Record Titanium derailler, which was the only 8s I could find. That was 5 years ago or more. Sooner or later you'll get 10s, whether you want it or not.

I have near-new Record 8 Ergo stuff on my '98 Cinelli that got very little use in the last 7 years. Wonder if I can sell my components and wind up with most of the money toward a new set of Record 10 spd components??
