Linear Brake Pads on Road Bike

I have an old Centurion road bike I use to get around town from the mid-80's. It's brakes work fine but squeal something awful anytime I apply the brakes. I've tried cleaning the rims with alcohol and I've roughed up the pads with sand paper. No good, I guess they're just 20 year old pads. I have some lightly used linear brake pads from a set of V's that came off my mountain bike after I switched to disc brakes. They look like they would bolt on fine. Is there any compelling reason why I shouldn't try this?

They should be fine. I'm running some V-pads on the front 700c wheel of my fixed gear. The curvature is slightly different between a 27"/700c vs 26" wheel though. What will work in your favor are a taller than average brake surface of the rim and shorter pads. Try 'em and see.

Been there, done that... with old centrepull brakes. Installing the new Kool Stop Salmon pads was the best improvement I could make to those old brakes.

You will likely find that you need to move the cup washers around so the thicker one is on the ouside and the thinner one is inside to avoid the caliper arms being splayed out too much.

I've run MTB V style pads on road calipers on a few bikes now and they worked out and are STILL working just fine.

You may or may not fix the squeal issue this way. I've got one bike with sidepulls that sings opera like a soprano on steroids. A little toe in fixes it for a while until the pad wears flat to the rim and then the singing starts again.
