Use a rampless/pinless chainring in 2x8?
Right now Im running a 1x8 with this which is rampless and pinless. If I decide to put the granny back on, will the current ring be capable of shifting or do I need a new middle ring??

It will still shift, but noticeably better with ramps and pins. Shifter
will have the push the chain further and then back off a bit. Not
a big deal with friction, but a noisier chain both shifting and
running without the pins.

I've read here and at Sheldon's site that pins only help on upshifting.
None of the chainrings on my CrossCheck have pins. And it shifts up and down.
I suspect having a big chainring with pins would help the upshiftingk, though.
Sometimes it takes a little while.
