Shifting problems, campag and shimano.

ive recently bought an old steel frame Pinarello and am desperate to ride it, but im having problems with the shifting, and on a tight budget im trying to find a solution.
its currently got early Campag Athena 9spd ergo shifters, fairly new Veloce 'double' front mech, fairly new 9spd 12-23 Veloce rear cassette and 9spd taya chain. i was wondering if it would be compatable with a RD-6500 ultegra 9spd rear mech. i dont really want to fork out on a new rear mech if i dont have to.
i did try this combination, but with a shimano ultegra rear cassette 12-23 insted of the campag one, and it didnt work. any help would be much appreciated.

Hi there, Welcome to BikeForums btw ---- your question needs to be put into another thread where the fixers are. I don't have the power to do it (darn it - I have no phonebooths to go change in!) - but will alert someone to do it.

And good luck on getting some helpful info!!

Buy a new 9 speed Mirage, Xenon or Veloce model rear mech. You might be able to bodge the Shimano unit, but Tullio will be unhappy. They are quite cheap anyway, and even cheaper on ebay or discount. If you are from the UK, you could try ordering one from Ribble cycles.

Since you have early 9-speed shifters to be fully compatible you'll need an early 9-speed Campy rear derailleur. Or I believe an 8-speed Campy RD would also work. I'm not a Campy expert, I believe Campy changed their cable pull and derailleur throw ratio in 2001. Check the archives for previous threads on this subject.

I'm running 10sp Veloce shifters with Veloce RD and Ultegra 9sp rear cassette. Smooth as.

Done.

I missed that. This could be a complication... You could always change the shifter ratchet

True, but if you update the shifter then you must also update the rear derailleur. The throw ratio must match the cable pull in order to match the cassette cog spacing.
