Suntour downtube shifter question

Hey all sorry for this stupid question, but...I am fixing up an older bike that has downtube shifters. The front derailler shifter is friction. The rear is indexed, but I just noticed that on the side of the shifter, it says index with an arrow one way and friction with an arrow the opposite direction. I assume I can choose between the two? It looks like a knurled wheel can be rotated to either option, but I couldn't move it. How do I switch between the options?

yes, you can switch between both modes. the shimano versions have a ring that you turn to switch modes.

You rotate it in the direction of the mode arrow you want to use. These rings can be very stiff so it may take a bit of effort to move it.

If the shifter has been in place for a long time there may be some crud or corrosion helping keep it from turning too. A drop of oil on the ring may make it easier.
