i just use flourescent ... good light .. no heat ... tho i do have bout 3 or 4 of those little LED lights with the flex head and magnetic base ... i use those little buggers more then anything else .. because i can direct the light where i need it most.

The tubes may not become very hot, although I wouldn't want to

hold the ballast for more than an nanosecond.

doh! .. well i meant not as much projected heat as most halogens put out ... tho i do use a set of halogens when i am having to work on my car in december and it is raining ...

In my last house I tapped into the single bulb socket that was already in the garage. I replaced it with two contractor grade balasts and two ceiling fans (dallas). The light was great and the airflow was a help. The cost wasn't bad because it was a compromise with my wife. We replaced contractor grade lights inside our house with nicer ones then used the old ones in the garage.

I've been able to carry around most fluorescent ballasts even after they've been in operation for several hours. Some (even the reactive/transformer ballasts) only get warm enough to notice. If it'll raise a blister on your hand when you grab it, something's wrong. ...then again, I'm an electrician by trade anyway, so that may make a difference.

Yeah you bet! I'm putting a rear-rack on the bike to carry the 150lb battery!
