Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.

I've never personally tried but Shimano says that STI's won't work with mountain front derailleurs. They might be right.

......but that doesn't seem right because CX & tour bikes are often spec'd with STI's and mtb derailleurs.
Maybe his STI is simply not triple ring compatible...??

How does the cable attach to the derailleur arm? Sometimes you can run the cable the wrong way around the anchor bolt (closer to the fulcrum) and gain a little extra travel.

I doubt it. I use a 105 STI with a MTB XTR fornt and a MTB LX rear. They work as well as with XTR/XT MTB shifters which I have on my ATB.
