I have an old 10speed Raleigh which I love very much.
When I'm going fast enough like 15+mph I hear a constant ticking at a certain point
in every revolution.so I thought, it must be coming from the inside
of the BB which is something Im completely novice at so I left it as it is
but then I realized that this ticking only occurs when the chain is on the BIG ring and only then.
so I thought there has to be a bent tooth that makes the noise when it engages with the chain but I inspected it and all the teeth are just fine.the crank arms are also ok and not loose in any way so where is the problem ???


one more question pls: what type of cassette/freewheel remover fits this old bike ? are these still available ?

If the noise occures at the same spot in the stroke (regardless of gear) it may be the BB or a loose pedal.

Had a very similar problem two years ago, after checking all the usual suspects and some unusual probabilities, a dry interface between the seat post and the seat post tube was found to be the culprit. Applied a light film of moly based grease to the post and no more ticking.

Make sure the bolts which connect your chainrings are tight. Also look for simple things like the tip of your shoelace hitting the crank as it comes around. I got off my bike half a dozen times one day trying to find what was making the "tinking" sound, only to realize it was my shoelace.

Your description matches my experience yesterday to a tee. I though it was the BB. But, as Blywn wrote, check the chainring bolts. For some unexplained reason, every one of mine had come loose.

This is old enough that you might want to find and old school bike shop and ask them for help. Or send an email to Harris Cycles.

As for the ticking, does it happen just when pedaling? Is the tick consistant with a particula pedal position? Or wheel revolution?

You need a Maillard freewheel remover. It may be a difficult tool to find. I think that I have one around here someplace, but I haven't used it in a quarter century or so. A good place to look for one would be "The Third Hand." In a pinch you can take the freewheel apart and remove the inner race with a pipe wrench.

Well well, of course you were all right and the annoying noise was no more than the right crank arm scratching the outer side of the front.der.

Yes, beyond what others have mentioned, I would second this - check for simple, "out of the ordinary" things also. I experienced a ticking that drove me nuts for several days before I realized that the excess cable for the front deraileur was bent toward the crank and every pedal stroke caused the pedal to it the cable end crimp. . . tick, tick, tick.

Ah, I see you already found the culprit, never mind.

A cyclic "ticking" noise that is audible only on the big chain ring and only while peddling? How about the chain making slight contact with the inside front derailleur plate? Most of us have experienced this noise which can be cyclic in nature, especially as we shift towards the larger rear sprockets while on the big ring. The caveat here is that I'm assuming that the noise is only present while peddling and not while coasting.

Had the same problem twice. Once it was the FD cable hitting the crank arm. The other was a cracked frame.
