Ok, newb Q
Ok, newb here, got a Q. Im not sure how to ask, but my large sprocket (don't know what it's actually called) the one with the pedals. Well it has 3 sprockets, 1-3, well when I try t shift from 1st to 2nd it doesn't give, it just make a crazy grinding noise when I pedal, but it doesn't shift. So I shift to 3rd and it goes to 3rd, but it still makes a grinding noise. So I have to shift up to 3rd then down to 2nd to get 2nd. I don't know if this is how it works or I'm just mildly ********. So, uh, what's going on when this happens? I have a Giant Boulder '07

Your front derailleur needs to be adjusted.
Go to Park Tool dot com. They have good step-by-step directions. Sometimes with front derailleurs the best plan is to completely disconnect the shift cable, pretend you are installing the derailleur for the first time, and start at the very beginning with the position of the derailleur on the seat tube.
