Frame question
Do you need the rear bridge on a bike, (considering I won't need a rear brake)?

I posed a similar question a while back when I was refinishing my Pista frame. I was thinking of getting rid of it to give it that sleek look. Everyone responding advised me not to, mostly due to compromised frame rigidity/structure.

I've got a "spare" Bianchi frame that nearly matches my current one. I was thinking of running 27" wheels, fixed. But the bike won't fit them around the bridge. I suppose I could trim it out and have some local hack tack weld a piece of bar stock. It's gonna be a beater, tied up to the pier while I'm underway, commuter anyway. And I've got some celeste spray paint as well.
What thinks you George?

Ironically, I have about 6 pairs of 27" tires and tubes from various bikes I've absorbed at thrift shops, and etc. And 4 sets of good rims.

According to Tony Oliver, in his book "Touring Bikes", the bridges across the stays contribute hugely to the stiffnes and ridgidity of the rear triangle. The only riders who make do without them are some cx riders, because the bridge collects mud.

Carefully cut it out, raise it a quarter inch or so,trim to fit, and rebraze it.
