try flushing out the freewheel/freehub with wd-40. then replace with a light oil like triflo.sound like your freewheel or freehub have dirt in it. or your chain is dirty , need cleaning and re lubing. or there a few frozen links than need losing up or replace the chain .

My thought is don't pedal backwards...

Other than partial backpedals to get your pedals into position, there shouldn't be much need to pedal backward.

Does anything bind up when you coast?

Sometimes it is simply an alignment issue that causes a problem when pedaling backward. You don't have to be off line very much between the derailleur and cogs to cause a problem pedaling backward yet it is completely unnoticeable pedaling forward.

Any of the Shimano or SRAM 8-speed chains will work nicely and be reasonably priced. Don't let the name "8-speed" fool you as they are fine on any 6, 7 or 8-speed rear freewheel.

However, depending on how worn the original chain is, you may find a new chain skipse on some of your smaller cogs. A new freewheel may also be needed.

your chain 1/2" x 11/128" is narrower than the other and may not mess with your rear cogs.

Would a chain that's 1/2" x 11/128" work?
1/2" is the universal pitch of all current bicycle chains. The 3/32" width is proper for every derailleur bike up through 8-speed cassettes/freewheels. 9 and 10-speed chains are narrower internally and, as noted may not accept the teeth of your cogs or chainrings.
