Replacing bottom bracket & crankset

Older road/touring bike, want to replace the bb & crankset. I want a lower granny gear. In looking at Nashbar and Performance bike, it looks like for the whole thing, all I need is the length of the bottom bracket shell.
Is this right? It's a Univega Gran Turismo, '80s. Threads are (MUST be) english, so I reckon get a bb/crankset combo for <$150. The sprockets on the bike are one piece, so replacing only the small ring is not an option.

If the threads are English (and they almost certainly are) the bottom bracket shell width will be 68 mm. You need to get an English threaded bottom bracket and the spindle length must be specified to match the crank you choose.

You can get a new triple crankset w/bb w/removeable chainrings for much less than $150. Of course the more you pay the higher the quality.

correct on the shell width, i would go further and state the spindle length is dependent on the spacing of your rear dropouts. (more precisely, the position of the rear cog set in relation to your crankset)
the taper of the spindle (ISO or JIS) must match that of the crank's.
