sram and lx derailleur

Hello
I currently have a sram 9.0 long cage derailleur, 9.0 grip shifters, and lx front derailleur. I was tuning the front gears and I seem to run into a problem. I can't really explain it but for example when I shift from 3-2 the dials on the shifters read 2.5 and from 2-1 the shifters read 1.25. The dials on the shifters don't seem to match with the gears I'm shifting. It's like if there are too many increments on the front shifters, and the front der just can't seem to match. This problem continues no matter how hard I try to tune the gears. I mean are the two brands not mixable or am I just tuning the gears wrong. Any help would be helpful, thanks.

Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.

There are a whole lot of variables that may affect this relatively crude, mechanical-analog gear display. If it was my bike, I'd leave well enough alone.
