Problem with speedplay frog cleats.

I have had my speedplay frogs on my road broke since about November. I have them on some shimano mt bike shoes so they don’t get directly walked on. This is the second time this has happened. The little tab in front that latches onto the petal has came off. You find this out when your food fly’s off the petal at a critical time (G)
It always happens on the left shoe (the one I remove the most) I do 100 miles a week. I am not sure time between the two breaking but still they should not be falling apart so soon. It’s too expensive to keep replacing them. I can get a picture tomorrow.
The shoes and cleats/petals where new and if I remember right the first one broke a couple of months after I got them.
I plan on emailing speedplay tomorrow with a picture. But I wonder if anyone has had the same problem?

I have the older style frog cleat, now upto 8800 miles with no evidence of malfunction. Had a problem early with loose screws, lost one and another
loosened but redid with new screws and locktite with no further problem.
I called Speedplay about the screws as they are 'specials', with odd head
angles, and non standard (larger) heads and socket sizes and they sent
me a packet of new ones. Try calling Speedplay. Steve

Uh... the "little tab in front"? I have three posts, one in the rear and one on each side, and a little rectangular plate that floats on a rubber bumper in front.

Do you mean the little rectangular plate? That can be replaced separately from the whole cleat. Or... Uh... I hate to say this, but could you have them on backwards?

I got a new set of cleats in January, rode about 1800 miles on them, then one of the little rectangles disappeared. About 700 miles after that I had to replace the whole kit cleat - one of the posts on the side broke. They do wear with walking, even on an MTB shoe.

Good luck.

I think he means the retention plate (rectangular plate). This sits on a piece of elastomer and performs a similar function as the springs in other clipless pedal systems. If that fails then your foot will slide right back out of the pedals.

right the litte ribber and metal piece. a really good LBS owner said he had never seen that happen. but we both thought it may be the slots in the shoe. they may have not been supporting that piece well. so I fileld them in with some felible epoxy and will see what happens.
where you able to get that bumber seperatly?

I had a pair of cleats wear out when the posts became worn. There was a lot of slop and my cleat consistently disengaged from the pedal. I was told to use a small torx wrench to rotate the posts so the worn side didn't contact the metal on the pedal. When I did this, the posts broke off after minimal usage and I had to kick out 35 bucks for a new pair.

I did make it 3 years when they recommend to change cleats every year.
