Business Questions, employees and owners please chime in.

Hey Guys,

I'm working on a business proposal for grad school and I'm hoping to pick some brains.

Right now I'm looking for some information on month to month sales (we're in Salem, OR, so seasonal figures would be nice) of how many bikes are sold, and the most popular bike sold (type). Names of shops and industry or area stats would be great (like how popular cycling is). Numbers can be off the top of your head, as I don't expect you to reveal your personal information.

Also accessory sales would be nice too, any and all information (most popular accessory, average monthly sales, average amount of product ordered)

If you wouldn't mind sending me a PM, I'd really appreciate it. I'd be glad to share the business plan when its all said and done.

There is an industry magazine "Bicycle Retailer and Industry News" (aka; BRAIN) that almost every bike shop gets and it is the definitive source on sales and sales trends. If you are nice about it, your favorite bike shop may let you have some back issues.

Hmm, are they just for the eyes of dealers? I come from the motorcycle industry and we get reports similar to those, and there is no way in hell any customer would see them.

Oh, and for the record I'm well aquainted with nbda.com

I guess in theory they are but if you explain what you want to do, a cooperative LBS may let you have some for your research.

Quite a while ago, an LBS owner I've been very friendly with for years lent me a few issues just for entertainment. I told him I wouldn't share any industry inside info and I didn't

I used to have my own subscription to BRAIN, just signed up for it, didn't work in the industry (and when I did I didn't have a subscription, go figure). You might also check their website, like the resource page https://www.bicycleretailer.com/resources.html

No problem, hope it helps. I couldn't share the bit of data from my former operation for several reasons (mostly we specialized in all mountain bikes with demo and shuttles), but also didn't exactly keep track of the data you want let alone our being a highly specialized operation which would skew the data quite a bit...

What you can also do is come up with a model from BRAIN. Then bring in your proposal and show it to them and ask them to adjust the figures closer to their real-world results.
