Any shorter - the cable, which is thick, takes too tight a turn and bunches up. Period.

Note that high end brake calipers have their cable mounts on the right side
and low end on the left
That design reflects the fact that some racers ran them right lever to the front, and I rode that way for 20 years, making many emergency stops and maneuvers that I'm convinced were better done with the control I had with my right hand. You can pitch a bike over with either hand if you just grab the brake lever and pull without regard to speed or weight distribution. Note that motorcycle riders may prefer that arrangement, as I think almost all motorcycles are right lever to the front.
With the advent of aero levers the tendency has been to return to right rear exclusively because there is less binding running from the left lever to the right side of the front caliper.
