Shimano Light Action Index shifter help, please.

What is the smaller lever to the left, on the RD shift lever used for, some type of adjustment? How is it used?
Thanks,
Uni

I took another look at a similar Shifter. It is a Exage Country SLR.
Here is a picture of the shifter and the smaller lever. In the picture the smaller lever in question is on the right, as if viewing the bike from front to rear.
What is it used for?
Thanks Again,
Uni

It converts your shift lever from index shifting to friction shifting.

In the early days of index shifting we used to worry about the shifter adjustment going out of whack during a ride. We thought that we needed to be able to shift into friction on the fly to finish a ride. In my case at least, that was a needless worry.

Thanks Retro Grouch. These shifters look so different from what's on my road bikes.

imo, all indexed shifters should allow for friction mode. this is a great option.

I have 20+ year old 7 speed deore XT thumb shifters. I upraded to 8 speed by turning off the indexing.
The indexing still worked but I have been running 8 speed on this bike for many years now. These things never wear out.
