headset
i took my road bike out for a ride today and i started hearing a slight sqeaking noise in the front end. then i heard a ticking sound. when i got home i took the stem and bars off and my fork slid out with the headset compression ring and top cover coming right off. i found the compression ring cracked (actually it broke in half when it actually was fully out of the upper cover). i never really have taken apart the front of a bike with the exception of stem and bar swaps but i've never had this happen. i'm assuming the headset needs to be replaced? what could cause that compression ring to crack like that? it's a threadless aheadset, btw.

It's the stem that holds it all together. Once the compression has been set and the stem fixing bolts are tight, the compression plug and cap serve no further purpose until the fork is re-adjusted or replaced. Does the compression plug appear broken or did it just come apart after removing the cap screw?

when i took the stem and spacers off and removed the fork the cover and compression ring came loose and when i seperated them the compression ring was cracked in half.
