2006 105 brifters ok w/2010 Ultegra brakes/derailleurs ?

Hi All,

Ordered a 2010 CAAD9 frame. Will be swapping over some of the parts from my existing bike but will also begin upgrading some parts to 2010 Ultegra. I would like to keep my 105 brifters & R700 compact crank for now and upgrade my FD, RD, & brake calipers to Ultegra. Are there any compatibility issues I should be aware of ?

I have to the the adapter sleeve for the BB30 BB to work with my R700 crank too....that should be ok right ?

Anyone have any feedback on FSA BB30 cranks ? The lower end stuff thank you....

The parts will work together, I doubt you'll see much "upgrade" from what you have.
I understand that once you put the adapter for the BB30 BB shell in, it does not easily come out. Something to consider if you are planning a crank upgrade in the near future. Might be better to go with the BB30 cranks now and other upgrades later.

Hmmm, words to consider indeed....I was trying to avoid the crank & brifters because they are both in excess of $300 each......whereas front/rear derailleurs & brake calipers together can be had for <$300 (thank you PBK)...but your observation about removing the sleeve after that fact is concerning....and perhaps worthy of a separate post to get some additional feedback...

My understanding is that the 2010 BR-6700 brakeset is designed to work specifically with the new 6700 (or 7900) levers. This is due to a redesign of the calipers, resulting in a change of the pivot points and required cable pull. I haven't heard of anyone attempting to match the last generation levers with the new calipers, so I have no idea whether braking performance would be merely below optimal or completely ineffective.
