Chainring changeout

I have a Surley LHT and would like to change out the 48-36-26 chainrings to 44-32-22. The cassette is 11-34 9 speed. What needs to be done? Do I need a different chain? Thanks.

The chain is fine. I don't know about the 22. I think the smallest the crank will take is a 24t ring.

You may need to shorten your current chain.

Have you priced replacement chainrings? It may be cheaper to replace the whole crankset and BB.

^ I agree...something to consider.

Here is a Shimano LX crankset with the rings you want for just $99. That's what I'd get.

if you just want lower gears, you can swap out just the inner chainring for a 24 (I think that's the smallest a 74bcd crank like yours can take).

You should also check out your local bicycle co-operative, if you have one, almost all of them have a giant box of lightly used chainrings.
