how do you get this off?
Any idea how to get this "bottom bracket" off (see pictures at the link below)? In quotes because the crank arms are the axle--it's one piece. An old schwinn continental.

Yeah, one of the easiest removals there is. You might want a hook spanner - can't tell from the picks. You can fake it taking the ring off, but you need one to set the pre-load on installation.

I use a flat end punch in one of the grooves and gently tap it to unscrew it. When it's loose enough, you can usually unscrew it the rest of the way using a screwdriver in the groove if you don't have one of the antique spanners made for the purpose. After cleaning it up, of course, relube the threads to make it easy the next time you repack the bearings.
