NOOB seeking guidance

hello, I am new to the road bike world. I just got a vilano road bike off of ebay with a crank set that is 170mm 52/33/28. I butchered the threads in the crank arms when installing the pedals. any suggestions for decent crank sets that are reasonably priced?

Bikes: 79 Peugeot UO8, 89 Peugeot Triathlon, 170$ Possibly a Raliegh Cross bike that I can kick your ass on...

What kind of taper are the cranks? Are they octalink? Square? Campy? or what?

Do you want a triple or a double crankset?


Do you know what BB spindle length you need?

How much do you wish to spend?

Do you want something cheap no frills that just gets the job done?

what brand of crankset has 52/33/28? not very practicle.

Another option is taking it to a good bike shop and having a heli coil installed in the damaged crank arm.

i am surprised by that gearing, there is a 33 then 28? there is practically no 'normal' middle gear like a 42 or 39. the 33 and 28 are both low gear, like a granny then a super granny gear.

How badly are the crank arms boogered?

If they're not too bad you might be able to insert the correct pedal in backwards to clean out the threads.

Average or better bike shops will have a die to chase the threads but they'll probably suggest replacing the crankset.

+1 before simply replacing these cranks, I'd take a good shot at salvaging them.

Sometimes the pedal thread is long enough so that by threading it from the inside (towards the frame) out it'll straighten the bad outer threads as it reaches them. If the pedals don't thread deep enough go to LBS, and have them do the same with a pedal tap. BTW- watch the mechanic and be sure he goes from inside (good thread) to outside where the bad thread is. I say this because too LBS mechanics try saving bad cranks from the outside, where the pap is just as likely to pick and take the lead from the damaged thread.

Also, if it's the right crank, you might find an inexpensive pedal tap at the auto store. 9/16x20 is a common spark plug thread, unfortunately they don't also make spark plugs with LH threading.
