Swapping out compact gearing

I have a question regarding swapping out compact gearing for a "normal" crankset on a new bike.

I'm considering getting a new bike, but the only options the stock bike has in terms of gearing is a triple crankset or compact. I don't want either. I prefer the standard 53/39 crankset, so how easy is it to swap that out? Do I need a different derailleur or bottom bracket? I'm sure it can physically be done, but I don't know if it makes sense to take a brand new bike and already have to replace several parts.

Thanks!

Depends on the crankset. For example an external bb, 7900 crankset can be swapped between the "compact" version and the non compact version. BB remains the same. The cranksets itself are different - 130 bcd vs 110.

You need to give us more information.

A link to the bike in question would suffice, assuming the company does a halfway decent job of describing their product.

Sorry guys. Bike is Trek Madone 5.1

http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...adone/madone51

Easy solution is to get the 5.2 except it's $500 more! The other issue is if Trek won't build it with a 53/39 and I have to get the compact gearing, I'd probably have to work something out with my LBS to put on the 53/39 without having to buy the new set. If I had to do that, I may as well go with the 5.2. However, if it's an easy swap, then I think they'd be more willing to do it for me.

Swapping parts out is probably something your LBS will do - they will more than likely be able to offer you trade-in credit towards the non compact crankset. Nothing else needs to change on that bike.

The 6700/6750 should retail for approximately the same amount.

If you want higher gearing it would be easier to just swap out the cassette.
If you don't like the big ratio jump from the 34 to the 50 chainrings you could replace the 34 with a 36.
I think I would do that.
