Concave Rims
Does anyone know if anyone still makes concave rims, also, do they provide any benefits?
A little backup information here, my father just turned 50, he has been a cyclist since he was a boy, for the last ~20 years hes ridden a recumbent but has recently been expressing interest in moving back to a road bike, my entire life my fathers told be about a cycle tour he took with his brother through germany. These conversation often turn to how much he loved the bike he rode on this trip (which was unfortunately totaled), the concave rims that his bike sported come up often, I would like to build a road bike for him before he loses intrest in cycling or become to old to ride (he's fairly athletic so I doubt this will be too soon).
Any information would be appreciated, my dads done alot for me and I would really love to be able to build up a bike like the one he talks about so often (the concave rims are a really big part of the build, if only for the nostalgia)
Thanks for any help.

Were these the rims made by Weinmann in the '70s? AIRC, they made some claims about increased strength but I don't think those had any real validity and the design didn't catch on. Don't know of anyone who makes that style anymore, but you might be able to find some on eBay or Craigslist.

You'll still see them manufacturered by those rim manufacturers who provide BMX rims. Closest thing from KinLin is the BAT in 20 x 1.75, however it's not a true concave rim.

thanks, the only references to concave rims I see are weinnmans so I would not be surprised at all, I'll ask him about it but it was 30+ years ago that he had the bike, so I doubt he'll remember the brand.
I seemed to remember Sheldon Brown talking about them on his site, something about they were the only rims he felt comforatble riding on with flat tires, but I couldn't find it so maybe I'm mis-remembering.
Unfortuanatly theres only one 36h rim on Ebay, the others are 48h

I've ridden a few miles with a flat tire on both Rigida 13/19 and Sun CR-18 rims without any issues or damage to the rims, but I never used the Weinmann concave ones.
A bit more trouble to get properly trued, but it should be possible to use a 48h rim with a 32h or 36h hub. My Bike Friday came from the factory with 36h hubs and 24h rims (they just left every 3rd hole in the hubs empty). But empty holes in the rim and the uneven spoke spacing would be more obvious than the extra holes in my hubs.

I had a set of Weinmann concave rims back in the 70's as well. Pretty decent rims. They had ferules and pretty smooth sidewalls. The concave part collected a lot of dirt and they were not easy to clean or polish due to the profile. They were not clear anodized, so they could be polished with mag wheel polish. I polished my set up real nice several times and got some nice compliments about them. Unfortunately It was one of my first wheel builds and the rear went out of true easily and broke spokes a lot. The hubs were mid level Maillard (Atom) and I sold those wheels to a friend for just $20. He seemed real happy with them, and I must admit I was glad to be able to try something else.

Not to my knowledge. In my opinion, a "vintage" build can use these rims:
https://www.velo-orange.com/vopari.html
or these:
https://www.velo-orange.com/vodi70ri.html
and only true believers will shun you.

thanks Jeff, i've thought those VO rims were really nice looking for a while, I might just end up building a vintage-esqe bike for him, I might have ended up having to make some consessions for a more upright position for him anyways, prehaps some mustache bars.
Thanks for all the input
