guide to making a fixed gear bike

After being gone off the forums for about 5 years, I wanted to make a fixed gear bike

Is there a quick down and dirty tutorial on it?

Or do I just need to get the right rear hub and go from there

What kind of bikes are good canidates for it? I assume road bikes work the best

Old steel road bike frames with horizontal drop-out are the best for a conversion. I would prefer an old schwinn or raleigh over a peugeot (although i'm french), because of the BB threading. If you're on a budget, you can keep a 3/32" drivetrain so you just have to buy a rear wheel and a 3/32" cog. If you have a little more to spend, change your cranks, BB and chainring and swap to 1/8".
Keep at least a front brake.

Bikes: road+, gravel, commuter/tourer, tandem, e-cargo, folder

Did you notice there is a separate section of this forum that is devoted to this kind of bike? I'm sure you will be the lucky 10,000th person to ask this question if you head over there and so you'll gets lots of help.

I love single speed riding but would recommend before you do this take your multi speed bike and put it in a gear that is comfortable for you to ride in. Then ride the bike for a month without shifting gears. You may find you do not like it and you will save yourself some time and money doing this. I as I said use a single speed as my knees at 61 just will not take a fixed gear anymore. My second suggestion is you also look at just buying s SS/fixie as you can get into them for $200 and you will have a hard time building one if you have to buy a bike and all the parts necessary. There is a thread in the SS/FG forum that is addressing this as well.
