Need help with RD problem.
Working on an '87 Miyata Nimbus Mixte for a friend. Bike very clean, all original. She wants
index shifting on it and is willing to spend the money for it. New wheels, RD, Bar-ends, etc. I thought an LX RD would bolt up to the existing hanger plate, but the mounting hole in the hanger plate for the RD is smaller than the mounting bolt on the LX RD. Drill and tap?
If so, what size? Or is there an RD that would mount under the axle bolt, like the original,
that has the capacity like the LX? See pic
Thanks for your help,
RH

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter
That has a type of bolt on hanger not used these days but low end bikes. Given what you're planning to put into is, I'd work up a total estimate and compare it to what you can buy in a new bike. Of course if you have some of the stuff already that's a different story. Otherwise if you sink lots of dough into this you'll have an expensive machine, but still not great bike.
Depending on how hard the hanger is, you might be able to drill and tap it to a 10x1 thread to accept a modern derailleur (test the hanger with a file before you kill the drill). You might also have to do some file work to get the stop tab to engage at the right angle.

My point? The bike was a low line model even new and probably not be worth the expense to modernize it. I also expect there will be other difficulties making current components fit that will surface as the OP gets into the project.

+2 Low end model, but should finish up nicely. Watch your spending. Find a donor bike and you will be fine. I completed my wife's mixte with a $30 donor, which supplied wheelset, crankset, bottom bracket, chain, derailleurs, shifters, etc. (I started with a $20 frameset).
A good donor can make a cost prohibitive project into a good deal.
