Are all ultegra shifters both triple and double or are they double or triple only?

9-speed Ultegra STIs (6500-series) came in one version that was both double and triple compatible. 10-speed Ultegra STIs (6600 and 6700) are specific to double or triple.

I have 10-speed Ultegra Triple but I use them on my compact double. Works fine. Just don't try to make a doubles work on a triple chainring!
