switching out rear derailleur. Advice on replacement

I have a damaged rear derailleur and have to switch it out. Front is a double crank. Rear is 8 cassette. Downtube Shimano shifters. It currently has this one-

either of the short cage Soras would be fine. your chain might not be long enough for the long cage model. The Tiagra will work too but you may have problems witht he DA.

What wrong with this one? The damaged one worked, didn't it? And it's dead cheap.

Nothing wrong at all with using that one. Was just asking if there was an upgrade that would be beneficial.

I'd go with a Sora 3400 or Tiagra 4500 for "future proofing" should you want to go with 9spd later. Else, a derailleur is a derailleur unless you are racing.

You don't need those to go to 9 speed. IME Shimano 7 speed RD and later all work well with a 9 s cassette and shifters
